Rami Fakhouri Recognized for Pro Bono Service by Seventh Circuit Bar Association

At the 67th Annual Meeting of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association and Judicial Conference of the Seventh Circuit on April 30, 2018, Goldman Ismail partner Rami Fakhouri received the 2018 John Paul Stevens Pro Bono and Public Service Award for outstanding pro bono work in the Seventh Circuit. The award recognized Rami’s representation of Tyrone Petties in his Section 1983 lawsuit against the medical directors at Stateville Correctional Center. The event program described Rami’s work on this matter as follows: Undaunted by a summary judgment loss and an unsuccessful appeal, Rami successfully petitioned the Seventh Circuit for en banc review, where his stellar performance yielded a significant victory for his client. Not only did the en banc decision vacate the earlier ruling and ensure his client’s right to a trial, but it also provided important guidance on when a prisoner who received some amount of care might nonetheless establish a genuine issue of fact on the question of deliberate indifference. When the case returned to the District Court, Rami’s extraordinary dedication and exemplary advocacy skills were once again brought to bear, and the case was resolved with an amicable and successful settlement.
